Building in Public: Initiate!

Welcome to the first ELK Strategies blog post — glad to have you. This marks my forth blog on my forth platform (Blogger, Tumblr, and WordPress being the other three) and the first one wholly (mostly) focused on my career.

Should I regale you with the well-trod “Here’s how I got to this point in my career” post? No. Could I? Of course — who doesn’t love talking about themselves?

Instead, I’m taking a cue from something Jim Sterne mentioned during one of our conversations we had prior to my launch of ELK. “Write it all down”, he said. “The whole thing. Then share it. Do it in public.”

What a terrifyingly…compelling idea.

So that’s what I’ll be doing. At least once a week, more as the mood strikes, I’ll be adding to the Building in Public series, where I’ll be covering the in’s and out’s of building a data consultancy focused on helping those who help others. I’ll also be figuring Medium out in realtime too — how do I add a byline? One thing at a time.

Also —of all the incredible advice I was fortunate enough to receive from my incredible network of friends, mentors, and colleagues, not ONE of them mentioned the launch day jitters! I usually only pace & shake this much when I’m about to speak at a conference.

Here’s a preview of story #2 — What’s in a name, anyway?

Joseph Miscavige

Seasoned data and analytics professional with 14+ years of diverse experience spanning media, academia, non-profits, and federal government roles. In addition to working with zombies, Big Bird, and dinosaurs, I’ve been able to see first hand the transformative effects that getting the right data in the right hands at the right time can have.

I founded ELK Strategies to leverage that experience to help mission-driven and non-profit organizations realize the value of their data to make better decisions to propel their organizations forward.

Passionate about mentorship and developing the next wave of excellent data & analytics talent. Sometimes conference speaker, sometimes conference organizer, former board member of the Digital Analytics Association (DAA). Recipient of the DAA's Practitioner of the Year award in 2018, which weighs 8 pounds.
